A Modern Expression of Korean Barbecue

ABOUT HWARO

Hwaro is a contemporary Korean barbecue restaurant rooted in the tradition of gathering around the fire.

Our name, Hwaro (화로), means brazier in Korean — a small charcoal hearth traditionally placed at the centre of the table, bringing people together over warmth, food, and conversation. That spirit of sharing remains at the heart of everything we do.

At Hwaro, we bring a refined approach to Korean barbecue while staying true to the flavours and traditions that define it. Our menu centres around carefully selected premium cuts of beef, grilled tableside and complemented by thoughtfully prepared Korean dishes, seasonal ingredients, and house-made accompaniments.

Our space reflects the same philosophy — contemporary and understated, while drawing inspiration from the warmth and communal nature of Korean dining.

Rooted in Korea. Gathered around the fire.

THE ART OF CHEONG

At Hwaro, sweetness begins with cheong (청) — a traditional Korean preserve made by slowly drawing out the natural flavours of fruits and other ingredients with sugar over time.

Long used in Korean cooking and drinks, cheong brings more than sweetness. As the ingredients gradually release their juices and develop in flavour, they create a rich syrup with layers of fruit, acidity, aroma, and depth.

We make our cheong in-house and incorporate it throughout our cooking as an alternative to simply adding refined sugar. From marinades and sauces to dressings and accompanying dishes, each cheong is selected to complement the ingredients around it, adding a more nuanced and balanced sweetness.

It is a small detail, but one that reflects the way we approach food at Hwaro: rooted in Korean tradition, thoughtfully made, and refined for today.
